Corpus Christi, nicknamed the “Sparkling City by the Bay” had a population reported to be 277,454 in 2000, in 2006 the US Census Bureau estimated the city's population at 285,175, making it the eighth-largest city in the state, the largest city on the Texas coast and the sixth largest port in the nation. The translation from Latin of the city's name is Body of Christ. The city is home to the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and is served by the Corpus Christi International Airport. The city is also home to a number of popular destinations for both tourists and residents. Some of the most visited attractions are over the Harbor Bridge from the downtown area and include the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay.
But, along with these wonderful tourist and resident destinations, as many of us are becoming more and more aware, we face a growing problem of abuse and addiction to both drugs and alcohol here in the Corpus Christi area. And, this problem extends from young children to older adults. It is estimated that 13,000 Corpus area minors live with an alcoholic mother or father. A staggering 1,000 Corpus area children aged nine through 12 are addicted to alcohol. And 5,800 Corpus area citizens over the age of 60 abuse alcohol or need it to function normally. Significantly, relatively few of the estimated 30,000 Corpus Christi area alcoholics and drug abusers receive the treatment they need. Whether it is called a “rehab” or a treatment center, rehab for addiction or alcoholism in Corpus Christi is essential, and an Intervention is the key to your family's happiness and a new life.
Compass Interventions found the problem of alcoholism, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and drug addiction ranges throughout the community. In 2002, we had more than 5,200 teenaged binge drinkers. 23.9% of those underage abusers drink almost 50% of all alcohol consumed by teenagers. And the problem is worse in the Hispanic community (60% of the Corpus area population), where there is the highest level of drinking and abuse of marijuana by middle school children of any ethnic group. Our experience shows that intervention and rehab can help children, teens and families overcome addiction early.
The medical and health ramifications and costs for this continuing rise in addiction are tremendous. Alcohol is a factor in over 60 types of diseases and injuries, with 68% of those people who come to a trauma center having a drug or alcoholism problem. Nationwide, approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported each year. From newborns to seniors, there are serious problems caused by alcoholism and drug abuse. Women who abuse alcohol are more likely to die from cirrhosis than men, and they die 11 years earlier then men. Young people who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who do not begin drinking until after age 21. Frighteningly, 20% of suicide victims in the U.S. are alcoholics. This is where Intervention can come in to help save the life of someone you love.
Here in Texas, alcohol is the leading risk factor in deaths of males aged 15-59 that don't seek a rehab or help in other ways. A Blood Content of 0.5% can cause the heart to be anesthetized and result in death. 50% of homicides in the U.S. are alcohol related (we had 19 homicides in the Corpus Christi area last year). When it comes to driving, the risks to us and others increase dramatically when drinking. An average of one person in Texas was injured every two minutes in an alcohol-related traffic accident. In 2008, a total of 975 people were killed in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents, with 55,600 injured in 161,900 accidents where drivers had a blood content of over .10 which is legally intoxicated. And, this has translated into 15 people killed here in the Corpus Christi area, and over 1,112 injured in accidents where people were legally intoxicated. An intervention and rehab can be your answer today before the person you care about gets in legal trouble, or kill themselves or others drunk behind the wheel.
Clearly substance abuse is a serious problem for the the Corpus Christi area. We at Compass Interventions are here to help you when these problems hit home—in the family or with a close friend or relative. Please realize that one out of five alcoholics who attempt to stop drinking without medical intervention and rehab end up dying as a result of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. You are NOT alone, approximately 53% of adults in the U.S. have reported that one or more of their relatives or close friends has a drinking or drug problem.
